How long does an asphalt driveway last in Louisiana?
Fifteen to twenty-five years here, and the spread is maintenance. Gulf sun and sixty inches of rain age asphalt faster than northern averages, so an unsealed, uncracked-sealed drive lives at the short end while a maintained one reaches the long end. The mat itself rarely decides; the water and the sun do.
What is the difference between crack sealing and crack filling?
Sealing uses a rubberized material that flexes as pavement moves through our heat swings, staying bonded for years. Filling uses rigid material that pops out the first summer the crack breathes. The label on the truck matters less than the material in it, and we use the flexible kind because callbacks are expensive for everyone.
Why does my asphalt look gray instead of black?
Sun oxidation. Ultraviolet light bakes the binder out of the surface, graying it and making it brittle. Gray asphalt is not failed asphalt, but it is asphalt asking for sealcoat, because the brittleness is what lets cracks open next.
Does hurricane season actually damage pavement?
Yes, three ways: saturating rain that softens the base under low spots, debris and equipment traffic during cleanup that a driveway was never sized for and washouts along the edges where runoff concentrates. The damage often shows a season or two later as cracking over the spots that got soaked or crushed, which is why storm-year pavement deserves a look even when it seems fine.
Can new asphalt go over old asphalt?
Yes, when the old mat is structurally sound; that is a resurface or overlay, and it rides like new for a fraction of replacement cost. Over failed sections it is a cover-up: the old cracks telegraph through within two winters. The walk-through decides which one your pavement has earned, honestly.
How soon can we drive on a repair?
Hot-mix patches take car traffic the same day once compacted and cooled, usually within hours. Sealcoat needs a day or two of cure depending on humidity. Commercial jobs get sequenced in sections so the lot never fully closes, and the schedule says which sections open when.
Is asphalt or concrete better for a driveway here?
Both work in this climate; the trade is upfront cost versus maintenance style. Asphalt costs less to install and repairs by the section for hundreds or a few thousand dollars, while concrete costs more, cracks less often and costs more when it does. We only work the asphalt side, so on this one question we will say so rather than pretend neutrality.
What can I do myself to make my pavement last?
Move the water and mind the edges. Keep downspouts discharging away from the asphalt, do not let sprinklers soak the same seam daily and avoid parking heavy trailers on the drive edge. Those three habits, plus a sealcoat on the three-to-five year cycle, are most of the difference between the fifteen-year driveway and the twenty-five-year one.
